Passenger Incidents On Airlines Up Sharply

Incidents of unruly passengers on airlines have significantly increased, with the average number of reported incidents rising. Such incidents rose from 1.76 per 1,000 flights in 2022 compared to 1.2 in 2021 and 1 in 2020. This is according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Physical abuse incidents remain “very rare", rising over 60% compared to 2021, and have nearly tripled since 2020. Verbal abuse and non-compliance incidents have also seen notable increases. To address this trend, IATA is calling for stronger regulation and better guidance to prevent and de-escalate such incidents. In the US, legislation has been reintroduced to create a no-fly list for passengers involved in assaults on aircraft staff. Airlines and regulatory bodies are prioritizing passenger and crew safety by addressing unruly behavior, post-pandemic.
